Valentine’s weekend with Craigy Boy

Valentine’s weekend with Craigy Boy

In the 5.5 years that me and Craigy have been together (minus a couple of  Ross and Rachel like “breaks” along the way…) we’ve never been ones to make a point of celebrating Valentine’s. If you love someone you love them each and every day, right? And I totally agree. But this year, for some reason, Cupid was tugging on my heart strings and urging me to do something a bit special to let Craigy know I appreciate everything he does for me. And he does a lot for me. Far more than I do for him. Case in point: as I write this he’s in the kitchen making us turkey meatball soup for dinner.  Share the... More →
The Great Arbroath DOOK!

The Great Arbroath DOOK!

Everyone has their own way of seeing in the New Year. In Spain they eat 12 grapes as the clock strikes midnight. Ecuadorians prefer to burn a scarecrow believing that it cleanses all the negativity of the previous year. South Africans chuck old furniture out of the window. And in Brazil they offer white flowers to the Goddess of the Living Ocean in the hope that she will bring them energy and strength for the new year ahead. Here in Arbroath the inhabitants prefer to get completely and utterly trollied (click if you’re unsure of definition) on New Year’s Eve and then, the following day, head down to the harbour and jump into the icy North Sea of their own volition. That, Warriors of the World, is know as the great Arbroath DOOK.    Share the... More →
Cupcakes, Costa Rica and a boy

Cupcakes, Costa Rica and a boy

I came to Costa Rica with a backpack filled with flip flops and bikinis and a ticket for a flight leaving six months later. Fast forward five and a half years and I’m finally leaving Costa Rica after unsuccessfully trying to stuff a houseful of belongings into that same backpack. Flashing back to July 2009, I had just graduated from Edinburgh University with a Law degree that I never planned on using. Looking for a more stimulating adventure, I accepted a job offer to teach English in San Jose, Costa Rica. Living and working on a beach sounded fantastic so I rushed through a certificate in TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) and headed to sunnier shores. Share the... More →

Iceland: The hot and steamy Blue Lagoon…

Going to Iceland without visiting the Blue Lagoon would surely be like going to Orlando and not paying homage to two friendly and slightly irritating mice. You have to do it. Well, you don’t actually have to do anything, Warriors. Iceland is a free country and you’re free to do whatever the heckeroonie you like on YOUR holiday. But my advice is straightforward and simple: GO TO THE BLUE LAGOON. Share the... More →
Iceland on the back of a (stubborn) horse

Iceland on the back of a (stubborn) horse

If there’s one thing I love more than all the cakes, chocolate and confectionary in the world then it’s riding on the back of a horse. Surely there is no feeling more exhilarating and liberating than galloping over hills and plains, your hair and the horses main flapping wildly together in the wind! Share the... More →
Iceland: Golden Circle Tour

Iceland: Golden Circle Tour

To be completely honest I’m not sure why this tour has become known as the Golden Circle tour since there isn’t a glimmer of gold in sight! However, if we think of the word golden as something precious and beautiful to behold then there couldn’t be a more appropriate name!  Share the... More →
GW and Stacy Doll go to ICELAND!

GW and Stacy Doll go to ICELAND!

My travel buddy, Stacy, called me a few months ago and I asked if I fancied joining her on a little Icelandic adventure in September. I took at look at my finances, saw they weren’t in the best shape and knew there was only one thing I could say…   Share the... More →
Today we’re going to… THAILAND and CAMBODIA!

Today we’re going to… THAILAND and CAMBODIA!

Don’t be afraid to travelling alone – it’s fun and empowering! When I received an e-mail from my ex-husband with flight details for our children to visit him in Sydney for the summer (well, actually it was winter down under) I thought nothing of it as my girls often travel to Sydney and Singapore  to see him. However, on the news that night there were riots and demonstrations in Bangkok (where the girls were passing through) so within the next 24 hours I had booked to fly with them to Bangkok and 3 ½ weeks later return to London with them. Today we are going to… CORNWALL!

Today we are going to… CORNWALL!

Our family holiday to Cornwall in August was an absolute delight! We tend to stay in Northern Cornwall but this year we decided to shake up our routine somewhat by staying in Bodmin which is located in central Cornwall.  We had booked accommodation at Tregullon Farm and our humble abode for the duration of our visit was the whimsically named Willow Lodge.    Share the... Today we are going to… VIETNAM!

Today we are going to… VIETNAM!

Why Vietnam you ask? We chatted long and hard about where to go for our honeymoon since we both wanted it to be a once in a lifetime trip. And indeed it was! Vietnam didn’t disappoint us in the slightest! Our first port of call was Vietnam’s largest city, Ho Chi Minh City, formally known as Saigon. This city was buzzing with life and TRAFFIC. Everywhere we looked there seemed to be someone or sometimes an entire family on their seemingly preferred mode of transport…a moped.  Share the... More →
Today we are going to… BUDAPEST!

Today we are going to… BUDAPEST!

Mark and I spent a fantastic four days in the beautiful city of Budapest. We travelled with BA who were second to none in terms of service (more of them later!). We got an early flight so we could get a full day in rather than waste it travelling.  So much to see, such little time!   Share the... More →
Today we are going to… CUBA!

Today we are going to… CUBA!

This week you get a well deserved break from me, Warriors of the World! I’m handing over the blogging reins to five dear friends who will be regaling you with tales of their travels over several different continents. I loved their stories and their pictures and have a feeling that you will be equally as enamoured and filled with wanderlust! Today we’re starting off with Henry and Emma who spent their honeymoon in the colourful and exuberant, perplexing and paradoxical Caribbean island of Cuba. Share the... More →

Craigy Boy took me to Paradise for three days…

Following the hustle, bustle and bright lights of Vegas, Craigy Boy and I spent the last three days of our American Adventure in Paradise. No, really. We were literally in Paradise. Paradise, Utah to be exact. Population of 800 and home to some of my favourite people on the face of the earth, the Woolf family.  This is me and Mama and Papa Woolf and I love them to the moon and back and they love me right back: Share the... A cold and windy San Francisco!

A cold and windy San Francisco!

“If you’re going to San Francisco, be sure to wear some flowers in your hair.” I’m sure you all know this famous little number, written by the Mamas and the Papas. I’d like to change it around ever so slightly. “If you’re going to San Francsico, be sure to wear some sun cream on your head.” Share the... More →
The crystal clear waters of LAKE TAHOE

The crystal clear waters of LAKE TAHOE

A couple of days ago I took you on a trip to Napa Valley and I described it as one of the most beautiful places on earth. The same could be said of today’s destination, Lake Tahoe, which provides a veritable feast for the eyes. I mean seriously, check out that view!  Share the... More →
Stunning Napa Valley

Stunning Napa Valley

I remember when I was around 13 years of age we were mulling over potential destinations for our annual family holiday. My Dad was keen to do a tour around California and wanted to hit spots such as Yosemite, La Jolla and Napa Valley. My brother and I, on the other hand Share the... More →
A day in Santa Cruz, California!

A day in Santa Cruz, California!

Have you ever heard of Santa Cruz in California? Perhaps not. Have you ever heard of the film “The Lost Boys”, an iconic 80’s vampire romp which just happens to be one of ultimate fave flicks?  I’m guessing most of you 30 and over are at least familiar or have watched it a dozen times like yours truly.  Just one question for you: Team Patric or Team Sutherland??? BlogHer 2014: what I got up to this weekend!

BlogHer 2014: what I got up to this weekend!

What a weekend my Warriors of the World! I’m pooped, worn-out, done in, more tired than a badger on a treadmill but the exhaustion is worth it for I have mixed, mingled, networked, nattered, learned, laughed and made an abundance of wonderful new friends in the process. Some of the these new acquaintances, upon discovering I had flown 11 hours to attend the conference, posed the question: “Are you crazy??” Completely and certifiably insane, I responded. Never denied it! And if being crazy/cuckoo/barmy/bonkers/daft and demented means that I get to have such incredible experiences then I won’t be catching the Sanity Express anytime soon! Share the... I’ve arrived safe and sound!

I’ve arrived safe and sound!

My dearest Warriors of the World. I write to you from the comfort of my deliciously soft and fluffy hotel bed in the Hotel Fairmont, San Jose, California. I type with weary hands and a less than sharp cerebrum but I was determined I would touch base before my head touches the pillow – more than 2 days away from you and I feel like I’m abandoning my very own offspring. Yup, that’s how much the GW loves you. So I arrived safe and sound despite being ridiculously and embarrassingly close to walking off the plane. It all started with a delay, an annoying and frustrating delay courtesy of British Airways. I arrived to find that my one time favourite airline had oversold my flight and that there was no seat for my little white derriere. Can you Adam and Eve it??  Out of 230 passengers only myself and Jason from Englandshire but now living in San Francisco were left high and dry and seatless.  We were not impressed.  This is the most not-impressed-look we could muster: Share the... What to expect in the next four weeks!!

What to expect in the next four weeks!!

As you read this chances are I’m on my way to Heathrow or already tens of thousands of feet high in a death trap plane. Do feel free to say a little prayer for me and my safe arrival or if you’re not the religious type then a shout out to the commanding forces of the Universe will do just fine. Jolly good. Plane journey aside I am hugely, massively, enormously stoked to be spending a month on the West Coast of the USA and what makes it even more exciting is that I’m taking my Warriors with me!!! Ok, so you won’t be joining me in person but I’m going to try and report back in such a way that you will feel you are with me every step of the gosh, darn way. You see if I don’t! Share the... Where are YOU going on your holidays??

Where are YOU going on your holidays??

Forgive me Warriors for being so rude! I’ve been banging on about my forthcoming trip to the USA and haven’t had the courtesy to ask YOU where you’re going this summer/year! Do you forgive me? You do?? Wonderful! I knew you would because that’s the kind of nice people that inhabit Planet Warrior! Seriously though, I really, really do want to know what your travel plans are because a) I’m nosy and b) my nomadic soul is always on the lookout for new destinations to discover and explore!    Share the... Help me plan my trip to California!

In a couple of month’s time I’m heading to CA-LI-FORN-IA baby, and I’d be very grateful for some Warrior recommendations!  I fly into San Francisco on July 23rd and will be spending the next three days in San Jose at a blogging conference.  Ah yes, I’m prepared to fly that far to become a better blogger for my Warriors!  I’m really looking forward to becoming more involved in the blogger community and at this particular conference there are going to be thousands of them from all over the world! You know me, I love people and I love a good natter so I’m hopeful of making a new friend or two hundred.  😉 Share the... More →

Restaurant review – SHAKE SHACK!

Restaurant review – SHAKE SHACK!

Say burger joint and immediately I think MacDonald’s, Burger King, dodgy meat from dodgy sources. I think thank you, but no thank you and promptly seek out the nearest Italian eatery. But my American friends Colleen and Mike assured me that Shake Shack held an upmarket status in the world of fast food chains and convinced me to check it out with an open mind and an open mouth. The world famous ELLEN’S STARDUST DINER!!

The world famous ELLEN’S STARDUST DINER!!

Right in the centre of Broadway, a mere stone’s throw from our hotel in Times Square, is located the world famous Ellen’s Stardust Diner, “Home of the singing waitstaff”. What that basically means is that the entire serving staff are fabulous singers (Broadway contenders for sure) and will entertain you whilst you chomp down on burgers, fries and other such diner style fare. The restaurant itself is a pretty cool hangout, packed full of 1950’s memorabilia, chrome and neon.  Even the waiting staff are uniformed to the 1950’s max! Share the... More →
A sunny stroll through Central Park

A sunny stroll through Central Park

Following two days of torrential rain on the Saturday and Sunday the sun finally shone down upon us! What to do in New York City on a perfectly sunny day? Why, stroll around Central Park of course!  And what made it infinitely better is that we were joined by my Auntie Joyce and Uncle Dougie who just happened to be in NYC at the same time. Brucey bonus! Just back from the Big Apple!

Just back from the Big Apple!

We landed this morning (Sunday) at 0730 after catching the red-eye from JFK to LHR. Craigy Boy wisely opted to stay awake the whole day to try and get back into a regular sleep pattern asap.  Me, on the other hand, well I thought I would have a cheeky little powernap and ended up being out for the count for seven hours solid. OOPSIES, I may be paying for that this evening!  The good thing is that I now have another two weeks of downtime before school starts which I’m sure will give me sufficient time to overcome any residual jet lag. Marvellous Mexico!

Marvellous Mexico!

I have been asked a few times since returning from our trip to the Baja Peninsula of Mexico if I ‘got any sun.’ After visiting what Jacques Cousteau called ‘the world’s aquarium,’ and after spending each day on a white sandy beach fishing in the Sea of Cortez and snorkelling with a whale shark I can answer unequivocally: yes, I got plenty of sun! Fears, phobias and flights to Finland

Fears, phobias and flights to Finland

There is nothing I enjoy more than taking myself off to far-flung destinations throughout the world.  It’s just a pity that there is nothing I enjoy less than the only realistic mode of transport of getting me there. It wasn’t always like this, on the contrary, I used to find air travel rather exhilarating and boarding the plane was part and parcel of the excitement and anticipation of the journey.  These days my holiday does not begin until my feet are firmly planted on solid ground and normal breathing patterns are restored. YOUR top twenty travel tips

YOUR top twenty travel tips

Starting to prepare for my imminent trip to NYC got me thinking.  What travel tips do I consciously/sub-consciously take into account? Could I be better prepared? What strategies could I put into action that would make for a calmer, more organised and altogether more pleasant holiday?  I was going to scour the internet for guidance, as I so often do, but then I stopped. Why seek the counsel of strangers as well-informed as they may be, when I have the very best resource at my fingertips… Share the... More →

My favourite country in the world (so far)

Oh the shame! The epic fail!  The complete and utter mortification! I fell asleep whilst blogging last night. A little bit of audience interaction is required today my Warriors! You know the children’s book series “Where’s Wally?”  (Or “Where’s Waldo?” if you reside in Canada or the US.  Actually, why did they change his name?  What was the purpose of this translation? Anybody?!!) Share the... More →

Costa Rica: the people I encountered along the way…

Do you know what I liked best about travelling around Costa Rica on my own? The fact that I was never actually on my own unless I chose to be so.  From the moment I stepped off the plane in San Jose, to the moment I boarded the flight to return home, my travels were blessed and enriched by the people that I encountered. A Roman Holiday

A Roman Holiday

ONE GINGER LOVER MEETS ANOTHER “Ceri, you did say ‘Grande’,” we reminded her when Marco the server at our Roman al fresco restaurant brought her out not a glass, not a pint, but an all-mighty vat of Sprite. She was equally shocked when we got our bill and her multi-litre drink cost over six Euros. Share the... More →

Costa Rica: Flora and Fauna

Due to massive technical hitches and a Ginger Warrior on the verge of losing it and declaring war upon all things computerised, today’s post will be a series of beautiful images rather than a descriptive travelogue.  Sometimes you just need to know when to quit and tonight is that night: it is now midnight and having already spent several hours battling with computer crashes, accidentally deleted images and corrupt files I must concede defeat. Those of you who know me will know that I love to travel. For those of you who don’t yet know me let me declare emphatically.. I LOVE TO TRAVEL!I studied Modern European Languages at University and as part of the course I had to (oh, the obligation!) spend a year abroad.  For me this year entailed 8 months in Valladolid in the north of Spain, a month in Lisbon, Portugal and 3 months in Antibes in the South of France.
